Toxin Free Household Cleaner

Thieves Household Cleaner is a concentrate. For most all-purpose cleaning, dilute 30 parts of water to 1 part of Thieves Household Cleaner. That breaks down to one 64 oz bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner concentrate = about 128 all-purpose spray bottles (30 oz. each) for about 88 cents a bottle. That’s cheaper than most all-natural cleaners on the market.

Dilution Ratios

  • All-purpose cleaning – 30 parts water to 1 part Thieves Household Cleaner
  • Heaving degreasing –  15 parts water to 1 part Thieves Household Cleaner
  • Light degreasing –  60 parts water to 1 part Thieves Household Cleaner
  • Glass and windows – 50-100 parts water to 1 part Thieves Household Cleaner

My top 10 favorite ways to clean with Thieves Household Cleaner.

1. Refrigerator and kitchen appliances

For kitchen appliances, mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 1 cups of water. Clean stovetops, ovens, microwaves, toasters, toaster ovens, blenders, mixers, etc. To clean the interior of a microwave, fill a microwave safe container with 2 cups of water. Place in microwave and heat for 5-10 minutes and Voila!  The steam will make it easy to clean up food and food particles.

For refrigerator, remove all items from the refrigerator. Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 2 cups of water. Clean the outside of the fridge, including top, doors, and exterior water and ice areas.

2. Light fixtures and Ceiling fans

First, dust light fixtures, blades and bowls. I like to use an old pillow case and open it up, insert the fan blade in it and gentles pull it off trapping all the yuck inside the pillow case. Then, mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 3 1/2 cups of water. Clean fixtures, blades, glass bowls, etc. to remove dirt and sticky residue.

3. Sinks, countertops, tile, grout, kitchen pantry, bathroom vanity, cupboards, inside drawers, and under sinks

For sinks and counters,  mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 3 1/2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray sinks, countertops and backsplash and wipe clean to remove dirt and grime. If sinks are dirty or stained, try adding some baking soda for a natural soft scrub cleanser.

For grout add 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 1/2 cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray tile and grout. Let sit for a couple of minutes. Use a small brush to get stains out. You may use less water for stronger concentration as needed or add baking soda for a little tougher scrub.

4. Toilets

To clean inside toilets, mix 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1/2 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner to a toilet brush. Clean inside of toilet bowl and let sit for a few minutes before flushing.

To clean outside of toilets, mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 3 1/2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray outside of toilet, flusher knob, on top and underneath toilet seat to naturally clean.

5. Windows, window sills and mirrors

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 4-5 cups of water.  I like to add 2-3 drops of Lemon essential oil for a fresh lemon scent and/or 1 tsp of white vinegar for streak-free clean. Clean windows, sills and mirrors for a sparkling shine.

6. Walls, outlets, lightswitched, door handles and vents

First, dust all  surfaces. Then, mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 3 1/2 cups of water. Use a clothe or sponge to wipe down  walls, outlets, switches, handles and vents to remove dirt and germs.

7. Floors

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 6 cups of water in a bucket and mop floors removing dirt and grim.  I like to use an electric floor cleaner and simply add a capful of Thieves to the water reservoir and clean away.

8. Carpet and upholstery cleaner

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with about 6 cups of water and add to carpet or steam cleaner. Clean rugs, carpets and upholstery to remove dirt and grime. Be sure to spot test in an inconspicuous location first.

9. Car interior

Add 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner to a 16oz spray bottle. Spray down dashboard, door handles, steering wheel, and mirrors and windows and wipe with a clean clothe or paper towel. Doesn’t get much simpler then that.

10. Baby and kids toys

Mix 1 capful of Thieves Household Cleaner with 3 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray toys, play equipment, train tables, doll houses, toy organizers or shelves, etc. to remove dirt and germs while it cleans naturally.

Toxin Free Laundry Soap

We have found so many uses for essential oils:  supporting my kids immune systems, supporting muscle function, encourage proper nasal function, maintain healthy lung function, nervous system support during times of stress, support healthy bone structure, helps with muscle pain after exercise, prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with motion,  supporting my  animals in a big way,  soothing after a really tough day. They are versatile and I have found them to save my family literally thousands of $$$$ each year compared to the “old” way we used to support our health. But what about our home??

Introducing Thieves House Hold Products!!!!

Last year Young Living introduces a new product to the Thieves line. LAUNDRY SOAP!!!! Now we can do laundry with Thieves Laundry Soap!   It contains plant-based ingredients, enzymes and essential oils, such as:  Thieves, Jade Lemon, Bergamot, Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon and Rosemary.  It gently washes your clothes leaving them clean with a light citrus scent.*  It can be used in ALL washers including high-efficiency machines.  It is a 32 fl. oz. bottle with a (6X) concentrated formula, which will provide soap for 64 loads of laundry!  Awesome right???

But the bottle is so small and the price is so big!!!  That was my first reaction to the Thieves Laundry Soap.  BUT, then I realized it is concentrated and it lasts a VERY long time! Remember you get 64 loads out of that 32oz bottle!!!

I love using the EWG website to check out the rating of products.  Unfortunately, they do not list Young Living products.  This is however,  because Young Living has proven to be a trustworthy source for natural products. The scary thing is,  one of the products I was using before Young Living became a part of our lives is on the list and received a F.  I was using their whole line of “NATURAL” household products thinking I was doing something good and natural for my family when actually I was using a product that ranked more dangerous then the “regular” products.  SCARY!!   After researching them on this site, I threw them all away and went back to vinegar and baking soda.  It is all natural but I was tired of my house smelling like vinegar.  Now I get to use all natural products and they smell AMAZING! WIN WIN for us!!

Thieves-Laundry-Soap-Comparison-3 (1)

Enemy # 1  Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) is a very harsh detergent found in almost all shampoos, detergents and more than a few toothpastes. Pick up a cross section of these products next time you visit the supermarket and you will find Sodium Lauryl Sulphate SLS or Sodium Lauryth Sulphate (SLES)  under the ingredients label. Sodium Lauryl Sulphate started its career as an industrial degreasant and garage floor cleaner. When applied to human skin it has the effect of stripping off the oil layer and then irritating and eroding the skin, leaving it rough and pitted. If you use a face wash with SLS and feel like you have a skin problem (too oily?) SLS may be stripping your skin and you skin overproduces oils to compensate. We avoid this ingredient at all cost !!!

Enemy #2 Petrochemicals are chemicals (monomers) derived from petrol, which as you know comes from oil. If you look at ingredients that make up items in your home, cosmetics that you use and various other products and you see these names then you know that that product contains petrochemicals:

These petroleum products are sold and used everyday in every home and nobody puts a label on them:“Warning: this product could be hazardous to your health”. They do it on cigarette boxes and they put moderation notices on alcohol…but why not on these products which are silently disrupting endocrine function and have been proven to cause cancer?

The endocrine system controls hormones in your body. Hormones control most functions in your body and too much or too little of specific hormones can cause massive problems from learning disabilities through to cancer.

Endocrine disruption happens when something alters this fine balance and one of the major disruptors is petrochemicals. Petrochemicals are responsible for a product called Xenoestrogens which mimics the effect of estrogens in the body. Estrogens are primarily female hormones, although they are found in men too, which work in the brain, bones, liver, heart, uterus, breasts and other tissues. When Xenoestrogens are introduced to the human body they begin to cause these tissues to “receive” more than they need and serious side effects are seen.

Enemy #3 Formaldehyde is used mainly to produce resins used in particleboard products and as an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals.  Exposure to formaldehyde may occur by breathing contaminated indoor air, tobacco smoke, or ambient urban air.  Acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) inhalation exposure to formaldehyde in humans can result in respiratory symptoms, and eye, nose, and throat irritation.  Limited human studies have reported an association between formaldehyde exposure and lung and nasopharyngeal cancer.  Animal inhalation studies have reported an increased incidence of nasal squamous cell cancer. EPA considers formaldehyde a probable human carcinogen.

I could go on and on with this list but I will stop here. All of these ingredients that are not found in Thieves Laundry Soap a long with these too:

Recipes with Young Living Vitality Oils

Rosemary Roasted Potatoes

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a flavorful herb that’s celebrated for its role in the culinary world, especially in Italian dishes. Rosemary Vitality™ essential oil lends a uniquely herbaceous taste to every dish it’s featured in, making it perfect for many savory recipes.  Here is an amazing recipe shared by one of our team members.  Thank you for sharing Catherine and I hope you all enjoy it as much as her family does.

  • Preheat oven to 400*

1. Unwrap your stick of butter and place in the sauce pan, place on burner over the lowest setting available. This will slowly be melted, do not boil, do not stir.

2.Peel and thinly slice onions. Place into your bowl. (If your eyes water, place and drop of Thieves Essential oil onto the handle of your knife or a cotton ball.)

3.Cut potatoes into bite size cubes. Place cubes in bowl with onion. (Do NOT peel)

4. Dice garlic cloves, sprinkle over potatoes and onions.  Finely chop Green onions. Sprinkle like garlic.

  • By now your butter is melted. The top should be a rich golden color and underneath that will be a creamy white substance. The top is ghee, this has a high heat point, perfect for frying and baking. The creamy part is that rich, salty sweet deliciousness that  makes butter butter. 😉 carefully remove the rich golden liquid from the pan and place in  glass jar or bowl. Save the creamy part for later.

5. Pour approximately 3 TBSP of the ghee over your potato mixture. Toss to coat.

6. In a glass bowl, place the amount of sea salt you wish to use. Add one drop of Rosemary essential oil, stir to distribute thoroughly.

7. Sprinkle the fresh cracked pepper to taste, and the salt and oil mixture over potatoes and give it all a final stir, and spread evenly onto a cookie sheet.

8. Bake about 20 minutes.  Poke the potatoes with a fork to check for tenderness. Be  careful not to burn the onions.

Remove your potatoes from the oven, place into a glass serving bowl and drizzle 2 TBSP of the creamy butter goodness over them, toss to coat.

Essential Oils

Why We Use Young Living Essential Oils

Spa scene with natural cosmetics

“Young Living essential oils are to expensive.  I’ll just pick some up at the health food store. It’s the same thing.  It is 100% pure essential oils too. It says so right on the bottle.”

The internet is filled with so many articles and information, it’s easy to become a skeptic. If you Google essential oils, a lot of different things will come up, both good and bad.  The hard part is people do not always mentioning what brand or kind of oils they used to base their article on.  So if you read someone sharing about the risks of certain oils, or warning about an oil even being toxic, make sure you know what kind of oils they are talking about. If they were actually referring to non-therapeutic grade oils, they are right to warning you. However, if an oil is a true therapeutic-grade oil, that “same oil” that could be dangerous to you could be both safe and effective. When non-therapeutic brands of oils are mistaken for therapeutic ones and are applied with an intent to support your health, not only is that unlikely, but it can actually result in harming you.  This is why I do not recommend you getting oils at the grocery store or even the health food store. Most likely, these will not do much good for you other than smell nice, if that.

So how can you know if a essential oil is  therapeutic?

One of the things that determines the purity and therapeutic value of an oil is its chemical constituents.
A chemists can actually create some of the individual constituents in an oil! Scary right!?!  It could even smell the same and look pretty similar, but chemists are not able to successfully recreate complete essential oils in the laboratory. Remember, anything less than the pure essential oil may not produce the desired results and can, in some cases, be extremely toxic!

The constituents in essential oils are very sensitive and can be affected my many different things.
Everything from the parts of the plant where the oil was made, the condition of the soil, the kind of fertilizers (whether chemicals or not), geographic region, climate, altitude, harvest season, methods, and the distillation process.

The majority of all the essential oils made in the world today are actually used by the perfume industry! Because all they want the oils for is their smell, the oils are made as quick and cheap as possible.  They using high pressure, high temperatures, as well as adding different chemicals. These oils may smell just as good and cost much less, but they will lack most, it not all, of the chemical constituents necessary to produce therapeutic results.

I recently attended a class lead by Dr Cole Woolley .  He explained how a therapeutic grade essential oil should be produced:
A therapeutic grade essential oil is defined as one that is specially distilled from plants that are cultivated organically or grown wild in a clean environment. Plants should be from the proper botanical genus, species, and cultivar. No chemical fertilizers are added to the soil, and crop cultivation is free of herbicides and pesticides. Essential oils should be extracted by steam distillation at minimum temperatures and pressures, as was done in ancient times. No chemicals solvents are to be used in the extraction process. During the whole process, it is also important that vessels of the right material should be used.

Essential oils exposed to light will polymerize and lose both their fragrances and their therapeutic  properties. This is why genuine essential oils must be stored in light-proof containers or dark glass – like amber or blue.“
Just because an essential oil is stored in dark glass bottles, that doesn’t necessarily prove that they are therapeutic!

He just described Young Livings SEED TO SEAL process.  How cool is that!!!

3589Melissa Essential Oil

One pound of pure melissa essential oil sells for $9,000-$15,000. Although this sounds extremely expensive, let me just inform you that it takes no less than 3 tons of plant material to produce that single pound of oil! Can someone make a profit off pure mellisaa essential oil that they are selling for $20 for 15ml bottle?? It just doesn’t add up.

Essential Oils are like Wines

Dr. David Stewart compares essential oils to wines. This is really a great comparison. In general, drug companies donʼt like natural products because they cannot be patented, neither can they be mass produces like they want them to. When you grow something, it takes time and you have to conform to natureʼs schedule to produce it. Drug companies like synthetics where they can control everything, including their production schedule and price… But this is were we have a problem, our bodies don’t do good with all these synthetic molecules that do not exist in nature.

An essential oil of a single plant species typically contains 100 to 400 different chemical compounds.  Essential oils in general, have thousands of different chemical compounds to be found among them. Because many of these constituents are in small amounts, there has never been even one essential oil completely analyzed. This makes the idea of synthetically manufacturing a complete essential oil out of the question. Chemists have yet to account for all of the ingredients in just ONE bottle coming from one particularly species.

Another great example is orange essential oil.

ylorangeOrange oil has more than 150 known constituents. Researchers suspect there may be as many as 200 additional compounds in orange oil in traces as yet to be identified. The chemistry of an essential oil begins with its genetic recipe stored in the DNA of the plant, but the final product is a result of the place and manner of growth and harvest, as well as details of distillation. The composition of essential oils vary naturally, just as the taste and aroma of wines vary year to year from the same vineyard. No two batches of essential oils are ever identical in the proportions of compounds present. This is one of the reasons essential oils work so well. They are always changing a little bit with each harvest.

The fact that commercially produced products are always the same exact formulas, bacteria eventually develop resistance and then they donʼt work any more. Drug companies have tried to deal with this problem by creating stronger and stronger antibiotics and antiseptics. The problem is that such pharmaceuticals eventually become too toxic to be applied to people.

The Difference in Essential Oil Companies

We’ve seen how there is a big difference in how essential oils are made.

So why did I choose to use the Young Living oils?
Just to make it clear, this article is not intended to try to pressure you into buying anything. I did a lot of research about essential oils before I choose to go with Young Living.  Now I love to share the information I learned with others that are curious and interested in essential oils.

Young Living has been around for over 20 years old. Gary Young has been working with and researching essential oils for over 30 years and farming his whole life.   They have farms, distilleries and offices all around the world. In fact they are the only company in the world that owns their own farms and have the same standards on all the farms!

Young Living is very open about their process of producing the oils and always encourage their members to come see the farms and the way they do things. I have been to the farm in Mona Utah and saw firsthand the process.  It is incredible!!!

Young Living carefully picks the seeds from the best plants by hand. They also make sure to provide rich soil for the plants to grow strong. They even have high standards on who is working in their fields – it must be people that love their job, and think and speak positivity. When they are distilling the oils, they use a very gentle technique with low temperatures and low pressure to make sure the oils don’t lose their quality and amazing benefits. Young Living also tests EVERY BATCH OF OIL that is made, yet only 28% of all oils are accepted, and sold. The rest are used on Young Living farms as a natural herbicide.
There are actually no pesticides or chemicals used on their farms. They use their own essential oils to keep the bugs and pests away. You may ask, ʻThen how do they stop weeds from growing?ʼ Well, along with their natural herbicides like neem oil, they have a crew that pulls all the weeds out by hand.

Young Living is also the only company that tests the oils on-site instead of sending them off to be tested. This enables them to identify the right time for the harvest as well as the right time to distill the oils. You can only do that by constantly pulling out samples (every 15 min). Through their constant testing they figure out the best time of the year, the best time of the harvest, and even the best time of the day to collect the plants. In addition they also have a third-party test their oils. This ensures the best quality and that each bottle can be traced back to its source.

The Young Living oils are never unadulterated  with chemically, nor is anything added to them to extend the amount of oil. They are pure and the real deal. Because of the high quality, Young Living Oils do not have an expiration date like other companies. The exception to that is in Canada, where it is required by law to have an expiration date on them, even though they will not expire. In fact the oils will not go bad even if a thousand years went by. This is how, when they opened some of the old tombs in the Pyramids of Egypt, the essential oils they had placed there still had the same fragrance and qualities! Mind blowing right!

There you have it, the reason why Young Living is so expensive. Which, now knowing all they do, to ensure we are getting quality therapeutic grade essential oils, I think they are priced very good. There is a difference, just like with a $3 bottle of wine and a $300 bottle of wine.

In my opinion, Young Living sells the best Essential Oils on the planet, and that is why I choose them for my family.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

Essential Oils

What Are Essential Oils

What are essential oils?

Essential Oils are the naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds that come from the leaves, flowers, bark, and other parts of the plant. They are extracted through steam distillation and then physically separated from the water phase.

There are three ways to physically separate an oil:

  • Distillation (steam, steam/water, or water)
  • Cold pressing (usually done for citrus oils)
  • Maceration/distillation

Distillation is one of the most important parts of the process as if it’s stopped to early or too late and the purity of the oil will be affected. I love that Young Living only distills oils one time. Think of it like a tea bag. The first time you use it your tea is strong, the second time it’s less strong, the third time even less…and so on. Same for distilling essential oils! Young Living has been around for over 20 years and have had plenty of time to perfect this art.

So then why do EO’s work?

Essential oils have the unique ability to penetrate cell membranes and travel throughout the blood and tissues. The lipid-soluble structure of essential oils is very similar to the makeup of our cell membranes and the molecules of essential oils are small, which allows them to penetrate into our cells. Essential oils are comprised of a combination of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen….the same compounds that the HUMAN body are made of! When used responsibly, essential oils are recognized and readily accepted into the body.

Pretty amazing right!?!

Ok, so, you might be wondering why Young Living and not anyone else? Let me tell you, we’ve researched and we trust Young Living. Their oils are legit!!! But why do I trust them? Three words: SEED to SEAL. If you want to read more about why we think Young Living is the best choice, check out this blog post with LOTS more information about the research we did. But here is a short run down as to why we chose Young Living

YL monitors every single step of the process of making these oils. Seriously – Every. Single. Step. From the seeds that are planted, to how they are cultivated, to distilling, sending the oils to be tested, and then sealing the bottle. This commitment to quality means that you can be CONFIDENT that these oils are safe and effective! I know exactly where my oils are coming from and I can trust they’ve been tested to be safe. There have been times when Young Living decided not to use a whole batch because it didn’t meet their high standards. That’s right, they gave up a profit to guarantee a high quality and safe product.

You can check out Young Living’s own site for more information as well as some great videos on this process.
